Concept

Visual Weight

The perceived heaviness or emphasis of an element within a composition, determined by its size, colour intensity, texture, and position.

“Visual weight is not physical weight - a single deep-red rose carries more visual weight than three pale-pink ones of the same physical size, because of chromatic intensity.”

Visual weight is not physical weight. A single deep-red rose carries more visual weight than three pale-pink ones of the same physical size, because of its chromatic intensity. Larger forms, darker colours, coarser textures, and elements positioned further from the central axis all carry greater visual weight. Understanding and managing visual weight is the foundation of achieving balance - both symmetrical and asymmetrical - in any composition.
