Named Line Types

The vocabulary of eighteen named line types used in floral design, from the straightforward vertical and horizontal to the complex Hogarth Curve.

“Eighteen named line types constitute the practical vocabulary of line in floristry - from the stable vertical to the restless contorted, each with distinct expressive character.”

Eighteen named line types provide the practical vocabulary for working with line in floral design: broken, cascading, contorted, continuous, curving, crescent, diagonal, hanging, horizontal, parallel, radiating, S-line (Hogarth Curve), spiral, vertical, winding, and zigzag. Each has distinct expressive and structural qualities. The S-line or Hogarth Curve has its own historical and aesthetic tradition. Named line types are the building blocks from which line systems and compositional logics are constructed, and a working knowledge of them is foundational to formal-linear design.
