Diagonal System

A line system in which the dominant axis of material placement runs at an angle, creating dynamic directional movement and visual tension.

“The diagonal system is the most directionally assertive of the line systems - it creates momentum and visual tension through the inherent energy of the angled axis.”

The diagonal system organises materials along an angled axis rather than vertical, horizontal, or radial. Because diagonal lines are dynamic rather than static, the diagonal system carries their expressive energy at the level of the whole composition: it suggests movement, creates visual momentum, and introduces angular tension. In contemporary and modern work, diagonal line systems create asymmetry and avoid the equilibrium of traditional radial arrangements. The diagonal system is characterised by directional drive.
