Concept
Radial System
A line system in which all materials emerge from or converge toward a single central point, creating a unified design with a clear spatial origin.
“The radial system is the structural foundation of traditional design - all lines emerge from or converge toward a single point, and departure from this logic is itself a defining characteristic of modern work.”
The radial system is the governing logic of traditional symmetrical design. All stems appear to emerge from or converge toward a single radial point - typically located at the base of the arrangement at the container rim. This creates a design that reads as unified and coherent, with a clear spatial logic extending outward from a common origin. Traditional symmetrical arrangements frequently have a dominant vertical and a secondary horizontal line intersecting through the radial point. Modern design deliberately departs from single-point radial logic. Sources: Pampling (360), Lersch (300).
