Concept

Winding System

A line system in which materials follow a curved, flowing path through the composition, creating organic movement and continuous visual rhythm.

“The winding system has the greatest inherent rhythm of all line systems - curved lines immediately suggest movement, and the serpentine path carries the eye continuously.”

The winding system organises materials along a curved or serpentine pathway that moves through the design without the angularity of a diagonal or the stasis of a vertical. The path implied by the materials carries the eye through the composition in a continuous, fluid movement. Winding systems are closely associated with curved and cascading line types, and their organic quality makes them natural for vegetative and contemporary design. Of all the line systems, the winding system has the greatest inherent rhythm, as curved lines immediately suggest movement. Source: Lersch (300).
