Compression Zone
A zone of concentrated, dense material within a design that generates visual weight and creates productive contrast with more open, released areas.
“A compression zone is defined by its contrast with release zones - density and openness generate meaning through their opposition, not in isolation.”
In German floral design theory, compression zones are areas of deliberate material density - compact groupings that generate visual weight and create a gathering effect. Their function is relational: a compression zone carries meaning primarily through its contrast with the release zones or open spaces adjacent to it. The opposition between compressed and released areas is one of the primary generators of spatial tension in formal-linear and contemporary work. Compression zones connect directly to the formation technique of Condensing. Attribution: German floral design tradition (Assman). Source: Assman (400).
