Concept
Negative Space
The deliberate absence of material within a design, functioning as an active compositional element rather than as emptiness.
“Negative space is not a failure to fill a gap - it is a positive design decision. Its neglect is one of the most common failure modes in student design.”
Negative space is not a failure to fill a gap - it is a positive design decision. When used purposefully it focuses attention, creates breathing room, and generates visual tension between materials. Designs that fear negative space tend to feel cluttered and visually exhausting. Its skilled deployment is a defining characteristic of contemporary and formal-linear work, and its neglect is one of the most common failure modes in student design.
