Spatial Tension

The visual energy generated by the deliberate intervals between materials in a design, particularly in formal-linear work where space between silhouettes is an active compositional element.

“The varying space between materials in formal-linear design creates areas of artistic tension - the charged interval is as much a design element as the materials themselves.”

In formal-linear design, the space between materials is not empty - it is charged. The varying intervals between silhouettes create areas of artistic tension that give the composition its expressive life. This tension is generated when materials of differing character - active and passive lines, geometric and organic forms, dense and delicate silhouettes - are brought into conscious proximity. The space between them carries meaning. Managing spatial tension requires the same precision as managing the materials themselves. Source: Lersch (310).
