Textural Contrast

The deliberate juxtaposition of materials with different surface qualities to create visual interest and enhance the expressive character of a design.

“Textural contrast modifies the perception of colour - the same hue reads differently on a matt surface than a shiny one, making texture and colour decisions inseparable.”

The most benefit is gained by contrasting textures within an arrangement. A matt surface beside a glossy one, a coarse structure beside a smooth one, a rough bark beside a velvet petal - textural contrast operates at the level of individual material pairs and at the level of the whole design's surface quality. It also modifies the perception of colour: the same hue reads differently on a matt surface than on a shiny one. Textural contrast is one of the most accessible and powerful tools for creating visual interest without changing colour or form. Source: Pampling (100, 106).
