Concept
Visual Balance
The perceived sense of equilibrium within a design as experienced by the viewer - a matter of impression rather than measurement.
“Visual balance is a matter of impression rather than measurement - assessed by reading the distribution of visual weight across all three dimensions of the composition.”
Visual balance is distinct from physical stability. A design may be physically secure but visually heavy on one side; conversely, a visually resolved design can be physically precarious. Visual balance is assessed by reading the distribution of visual weight - how size, colour, texture, and placement each contribute to perceived mass on either side of the compositional axis, and at different heights and depths.
