Concept

Gradation

The sequential arrangement of materials so that a quality - size, colour value, texture, or form - changes progressively through the composition.

“Gradation is distinguished from repetition by its sequential and cumulative character - it leads the eye through transformation, not continuity.”

Gradation leads the eye smoothly from one state to another - from large to small, dark to light, complex to simple - creating a sense of transformation and flow. It is described as a particularly useful tool in traditional work. Gradation of colour value is powerful for creating depth and directing attention toward the focal area. It is distinguished from repetition by its sequential and cumulative character.
