Visual Weight (Balance subtype)
The perceived heaviness or emphasis of an element within a composition, determined by its size, colour intensity, texture, and distance from the central axis.
“Visual weight is not physical weight - colour intensity, texture, and distance from the axis all contribute as much as physical size to how heavy an element appears within a composition.”
Balance in floral design is a function of visual weight. An object may appear heavier if it is relatively larger in size, stronger in colour, or coarser in texture than surrounding objects. Distance from the focal area or from the vertical axis also influences perceived weight: elements further from the axis appear heavier than identically sized elements placed closer to it. A single large blossom inserted in the focal area can balance an aggregate of small flowers placed far to one side. Understanding visual weight is the foundation of achieving balance - both symmetrical and asymmetrical. Source: Pampling (200).
