Design of the Month - Papermelia
Our June Design of the Month brings together elements of papercraft, traditional composite flowers and contemporary floral techniques. Spain’s Alex Segura has crafted an intriguing base out of paper for this bridal design, basing the concept on classically constructed composite flowers, like Glamelias or Rosemelias. Onto this delightfully textured foundation, he has worked a combination of Cymbidium and Phalaenopsis Orchids.
The colour palette is intriguing and moody, offering a different take on bridal design - can you imagine the bridal outfit this design would perfectly complement?

Taking Inspiration from the Classics
|
|
Do you have a penchant for more traditional or classical styles of design? Or simply classic principles and influences, like symmetrical forms, gradation, even distribution or radial line organisation? Classical and traditional arrangements are often created on solid foundational principles that can help us to understand design better, and they can offer inspiration for fertile imaginations.
|
|
The theme for our next Designing to Win program is ‘Classically Inclined’ and it brings an opportunity to think through what is classical and how it might offer design inspiration - all within an exercise that allows you to refine one concept through multiple arrangements. Not only can it help you to understand design principles and competition requirements better, it can also help hone your process for creating floral competition entries.
We postponed the launch of the ‘Classically Inclined’ theme from late 2024 and are now excited to be offering it again. As per our previous Designing to Win programs you can register to participate as a Designer, creating and submitting works for discussion and evaluation, or as an Audience member, sharing in the learning through observation.
|
|
The program inclusions offer an abundance of ideas, learning and enjoyment - 3 eBooks to download, 2 companion videos and 2 online Design Forums to join or watch later.
Participating Designers create a design to a schedule for the first Design Forum, then revise, remake or transform their design for the second Design Forum, based on the initial feedback and greater understanding of the schedule requirements.
Registrations will be available from 1st July 2025. Participating designers will submit their designs by 1st August 2025.
Our program requires a design for display in a Prima Ballerina’s dressing room. What would you create for this space?
|
|
The program is inclusive of all levels of experience - it allows you to work at your own level, with skills you already have and with materials that are readily or easily available.

Leaders, Learners and Laughter in Brisbane

Our days in Brisbane with Bart Hassam were full of many fun moments, along with a plethora of fascinating designs, intimate learning and technical knowledge. And, of course, the auditorium was frequently filled with Bart’s unmistakable laugh - an accurate reflection of an event that unfolded well and was enjoyed by all participants. We’ve had great feedback - which has already inspired us for our planning for 2026 (stay tuned!).
Bart generously shared his talents and knowledge across many topics, with attendees taking home new and refreshed insights into flower placements, extending proportions, technical tips, creative decision making, and more.

You don’t have to get up at in the middle of the night to improve your design skills.
I'm now offering classes in time zones chosen to make it easy to participate from almost anywhere in the world. Perhaps you're in Nairobi, Capetown, London or Barcelona. Or maybe Chicago, Denver or LA. Or even somewhere in Australia, Singapore or New Zealand. Check out class times near you.
Beauty comes from nature, but it is our design skills that determine how much impact we create with the natural materials we have. Join me in four hands-on exercises and watch your designing bloom.
I teach floral design principles in a way that is as inclusive as possible and welcome participants from all floral traditions and parts of the world. With only eight participants per class, we'll have plenty of time to cover everyone’s work in detail and you have the opportunity to gain design insights through analysis of others’ work as well as your own.
We'll sharpen our focus by each choosing a palette of just two materials and then create four completely different designs, each with its own unique design challenges, problems and solutions.
And you'll finish with a new or renewed passion for creating through the principles of design, as well as (at least) four new designs that showcase your design skills and ingenuity.
