Welcome to Flower Thoughts March 2024.

Design Directions

In every design we create we aim to address all of the elements and principles effectively. However, different ways of directing proportions present unique challenges in achieving a harmonious result.

In Design Directions, we explore design principles, particularly proportion, using the unique challenges and constraints of five distinct design styles as a viewpoint from which to examine design principles.

Join me for six lessons and five practical tasks over 12 weeks, starting 25th March. We'll progress our grasp of design principles together, through discussion and the shared learnings as we create five distinct designs.

Design of the Month

Our March Design of the Month was created by US designer Trish Nishikawa CFD, AIFD as part of Designing to Win. Trish’s creative and intricate composition interpreted the program theme, Uncommon Threads, and was organised around a carefully crafted disc of Pussy Willow (Salix) using the Tatami technique.

The arrangement is a considered design playing with density and transparency, and an interplay of radial and overlapping line systems.

We should also mention that congratulations to Trish are in order on her recent attainment of membership of the American Institute of Floral Designers.

Philadelphia Flower Show

My second time at the renowned Philadelphia Flower Show this year afforded me the amazing chance to contribute behind the scenes to the Schaffer Designs Legacy exhibit entitled CONNECTED: A Floral Legacy.
